Assalamalaikum (Peace be on you), Dear Readers,
Today (4th day of Ramadhan), fasting appeared to be a little heavy for me. I don’t know why, but i was gasping for water and food just within 8 hours after Suhoor (the food we have before starting to fast daily). My throat felt a little irritated yesterday due to the dust storm that lasted for nearly 30 minutes. Just before Suhoor, i could feel my body feeling a little weak.
However, i had my Suhoor and then went for Fajr Salah. After returning, i went straight to bed and slept immediately. I got up after 6 hours only to feel my body heating up with fever and a soar throat. That was when i started feeling the need of Water. I looked at the clock and the time was just 10 am. I was like “Ya Allah, another 8 hours to go before i can take a drop of water”.
The thirst and hunger kept on increasing exponentially and I was quite surprised the way my body behaved today. By Zuhr Salah, my head started aching due to thirst. To beat the time, I sat down to browse internet looking for something to read that will distract my mind and keep it away from the thoughts of hunger and thirst. It was then that my eyes fell on a picture, that instantly made me forget my hunger and thirst!
Check the picture below of a starving child and a vulture waiting to pounce on the child as soon as she dies:
This picture of starving child was taken by a South African photographer whose name was Kevin carter. He took this picture in 1993 in Southern Sudan, a place within the so called “Triangle of Death”. The Triangle of death refers to the area between Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia which has been suffering from famine for the past 2 decades. In this photo, a little girl is trying to reach the feeding center by crawling on the ground because she does not have enough energy to rise up and walk. On her way, she is resting for sometime to regain little energy before starting to crawl again. This is just to reach a place where she will get some food after many days!
The photographer was awarded “Pulitzer Prize” for this picture which flashed on nearly all the leading magazines that year. But cater was a very sensitive man, especially when it comes to human sufferings. He later committed suicide. It is believed that this picture of starving child stayed in his mind where ever he went.
Then I started checking up the statistics of famine around the world. Millions of people die every year because they have nothing to eat or drink! Isn’t this a shame on the entire humanity that even in this 21st century, we have people dying due to hunger? There is no balance of food across the world. In most of the parts, food is thrown away as an extra garbage because of its abundance. So many countries have restaurants where food goes as waste on a daily basis. People tend to order in excess and later they throw it because they don’t have place in the stomach to eat the extra food. And this extra food is then eaten by cats and dogs!
This picture of starving child speaks more than just about the Child and Vulture. Looking into it there is a sense of sadness, despair and coldness. The child, already weak due to days of hunger, is struggling to reach the feeding center to get something to eat, and the vulture is waiting for the child to die so that it can feed on her.
Looking at this picture of starving child, a thought struck my mind that what if this child would have been my son? What if such a condition strikes us owing to our habit of wasting food and water? What if on the Day of Judgment Allah throws us into hell fire because we used to fill our stomachs so much that much of it ended up in garbage cans, yet never cared about others who died of hunger? Why are our pockets so tight when it comes to feeding poor while we shell out huge bucks to fill our stomachs and throw food in the garbage?
Alhumdulillah, I learnt a great lesson today. I was getting restless with the hunger that had to last for only 14 hours and which had to last within closed home with all the facilities to keep the body cool and comfortable. Not only comfort, but prior to those 14 hours of fasting, I had food up to my neck and after fasting too I was sure of filling my stomach. I forgot that there are people in the world who have not eaten for days together and are dying because of hunger. How selfish can I be!
Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh) always care for the poor and never allowed food to be wasted. He took great care not to leave any food on the plate. He stated that morsels and food that had been dropped should be eaten after cleaning the dust particles. On the other hand, he advised people not to be extreme in the act of eating and said “No person can fill a dish that is worse than his stomach”.
Fasting in Islam shows us a glimpse of what happens if Allah pulls away food and water from our life. Most of us do not even remember the great favors Allah has bestowed upon us and hence never thank him for it. We are always complaining for the things that we don’t have. This month of Ramadhan brings us to the point where we ponder over it and then thank Allah for bestowing his countless favors upon us.
I hope that just as I learnt a lesson from this picture of starving child, all of you will also get enlightened.
Please leave you comments!
Assalamalaikum (Peace be upon you), Dear Readers
I just completed my first Umrah! Alhumdulillah.
The day finally came when i ventured out on Umrah and visited the most sacred place for Muslims in the world, The Glorious Kaba. I always wanted to be there, but circumstances in my life never allowed me to go. Or rather i should say the time had not come for me to visit the Holy city of Makkah until now.
I know a lot of you wonder that I, being a daee (preacher of Islam), did not pay visit to Makkah and Madinah and hence did not do my Umrah and Hajj till now. Although i traveled to quite a few countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Dubai etc; but Saudi Arabia was always left out for some reason. Honestly, i tried quite a few times, but something or the other happened and i couldn’t go. Once i had planned completely, but my vacation got cancelled.
Later i also had my Umrah visa stamped for the same, but then due to an emergency i had to cancel it again. Similarly, for Hajj me and my mother applied through the government quota for three consecutive years, but we did not get selected for it. There were many instances when i tried, but i just couldn’t make it.
Truly, the time has to come for one to complete a particular obligation like Umrah or Hajj. And the time finally came when i ventured out on the path of Knowledge to Madinah. My Journey of knowledge took me first to Makkah (Mecca) on Umrah and then to Madinah (Medina).
I arrived in Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia. The very next week i ventured out on Umrah to Makkah. There are several ways to reach Makkah, however i opted for a Bus. The Umrah bus leaves Riyadh on every Monday and Wednesday and brings us back to Riyadh by Friday night.
I took the bus from Riyadh which started probably at 4 pm on Monday. It took us 10 hours to reach Makkah. On the way, we stopped at Meeqat, that is at Taif which is the meeqat for those who go from Riyadh. I put on my Ihraam at meeqat and thus my Umrah began. The bus reached our hotel in Makkah at around 3 am in the morning, giving us time to get ready for fajr Salah at Kabatullah.
From the time I put on my Ihraam and as we approached the Holy city of Makkah, tears kept on rolling my cheek making my beard wet with it. There was a combination of feelings that i just couldn’t make out. I was very happy and excited about the Umrah, at the same time a fear gripped my heart that I am coming close to my Lord. I was wondering, how can a sinner like me present himself in front of Allah? I kept crying all the way with a strong belief that Allah will forgive all my sins which I might have done knowingly or unknowingly. I did not leave the opportunity of begging like a beggar in front of Allah for his mercy and crying like a small child for the thing I required the most, that is, the forgiveness of Allah. And Alhumdulillah, I feel content and happy while leaving this place and I am positive that Allah forgave all my sins in this Umrah.
The moment we reached our hotel, I dropped my luggage in my room and immediately started off for the Masjid-e-Haram. It was a 10 minutes walk from the hotel to the Masjid. There was a big slope that i had to climb to reach the Masjid. As I started to descend from the slope, i could see the magnificent Masjid, the most beautiful view i ever saw in my life!
I wanted to finish the obligation of Umrah first. So without wasting time, I quickly started the process. After the Tawaaf, I offered the two rakahs near Maqam-e-Ibraheem and then hurried for Saee. I completed my Saee and thus completed my first Umrah. After this I just sat down infront of kaba, staring at it.
Someone told me that this is off season and not many people turn up for Umrah. But they were wrong. The rush was so huge that the Masjid was Packed with pilgrims. The most difficult part was coming close to the hajre-aswad (the black stone). Although one can just raise the palm towards it from a good distance, yet since it was my first Umrah, i wanted to touch it or more so kiss it.
As I started penetrating the inner circles of people doing tawaf trying to come close to the Black stone, i could feel my body getting squeezed like a tooth paste. Everyone were rushing to touch the stone. I had to use all my strength to penetrate deeper and reach the black stone. I reached it and fortunately kissed it. Now don’t ask me how i came out from there.
The view of Kaba was the most beautiful scene I have ever seen in my life. Just staring at kaba gave me such a peace of mind and heart that i kept staring at it for hours. Then i stood up and offered Salah and made dua to Allah for all those who had requested me to make dua for them.
Rest of the days I spent completely in the mosque in Ibadah. On Friday, after Jumaa Salah, we started off for our return journey to Riyadh from Umrah. I did not feel like leaving from there, and wished I just stayed there for ever!
Alhumdulillah, now I feel great and content that I am a soldier of Allah, a Daee of Allah, and feel ever more happy to call people towards our true creator.
Note: I did not take more pictures because I use photography only for Educational and Dawah purposes. I wasn’t planning to take snaps, but it struck me at the last moment that adding few pics of my Umrah will encourage many youngsters to plan for this glorious journey (instead of traveling elsewhere and wasting money). Hence i could take only these 6 snaps from my cellphone. Sorry for that.
Hopefully, I complete my Hajj as soon as possible inshallah. Please pray for me!
Assalamalaikum to all my readers (Peace be upon you),
Well i am back again to blog! Yeah i know i was not regularly updating my blog with the events and happenings around me. Apologies for that!
But now i am back and will update my blog regularly inshallah. There are a lot of things to be discussed starting from my personal tours and travels to current affairs. Keep checking my posts regularly inshallah, will make sure you all get some useful information!
Assalamalaikum (Peace be upon you), Dear Readers!
I had informed you all in my previous post, that i would be traveling on a Journey to the well known madrasa “Jamia Darusaalam, Oomerabad”. Well i just returned back from it and trust me, it was a great experience!
I am sure there are many amongst you who are not aware of Oomerabad. Well how can you be, it ain’t a big city! And those who hear the word “Umri” or “Oomeri” after an Islamic scholar’s name, like “XYZ Umri”, then know that he is from this Islamic university.
Oomerabad, is a very small town located about 8 kms from the city Ambur, the place best known for its leather business in India. Ambur is nearly 150 kms from Bangalore and Chennai. This town is named after a famous leather merchant whose name was “Kaka Oomer” (or Umar). He was a noble man. He came to this place about 150 years ago and started his business which flourished by Allah’s grace. Then he started inviting people to come and live in that place and people started settling down gradually. He arranged for drinking water facility, agricultural facility, and much more. This town came to be known as “Oomerabad”, after the name of the founder “Kaka Oomer”. But his quest to help people did not end here. He wanted to setup an Islamic University, a madrasa, from where people could gain the knowledge of Allah and thus flourish in this life. His prayers were answered by Allah and hence he laid down the foundation of “Jamia Darussalam”, about 80 years ago. His pious intention and trust on Allah brought much recognition to this Islamic University. Since its inception, Jamia Darussalam Oomerabad has produced Hundreds of Islamic Scholars who spread across the world. Some among them have also went ahead and completed their Masters and PHd from world renowned universities like Jamia Islamia, Madina.
Alright, that was “Once upon a time” story about Oomerabad! Now lets talk about my Journey to this prestigious university, my experience in it, and what i learnt from being a student of this Islamic University .
I was accompanied by two of my Da’wah team mates, Nabeel and Akif ur rahman.
To reach Oomerabad, we had two options – either to go via Bangalore or via Chennai. We choose to go via Bangalore. We booked our train reservations three days prior to the start of our course. We couldn’t get confirmed seat and were put in waiting list. We were quite positive (thanks to everyone’s advice
) that our seats would get confirmed without any problem. But when we reached the station to catch our train, we learnt that our seats were not confirmed. WE MISSED OUR TRAIN! The entire journey takes around 15 hours and now we were left with no options. No train, No buses and No flights. We returned home disappointed and prayed to Allah for a way out of of this mess. To our surprise, we got a call from a friend who fetch us three flight tickets to Bangalore! Alhumdulillah, the flight was early in the morning and we reached Bangalore by 10 am the next day. From there we had to catch a local Train to reach Ambur (City famous for leather business). From Ambur, we had to catch bus to reach our destination, Oomerabad.
We were welcomed by the students in the campus and guided us towards the main office block. We met our course coordinator who quickly took us to our room. Below are the snaps of our room:
Food was awesome and on time. There was absolutely no complaint from our side and we were getting more than what we were officially allotted. I have a habit of becoming friends with cooks where ever i go. In all the previous companies i worked in, all the cooks were my good friends. Not only does the poor guy feel happy (since these guys are neglected by all), we also get advantage over others when it comes to food
. Below are some of our snaps with the cook and other students while in Dining hall:
The classes started two days after we arrived in the University. Out of the entire strength of the class, we 3 were the only ones who were not scholars. Remaining all were qualified scholars and that’s when we realized that this course was actually meant for scholars. This was a Da’wah learning course in which Scholars were being taught on how to convey the message of peace to others and hence become Daees. And guess what? In this particular course, we 3 were the most experienced in the field of Da’wah (Since we are in it for the past 8 years) and others had absolutely no experience in it. Mashallah, Our classmates never let us feel that they were qualified scholars, rather they were always anxious to learn from our experiences.
The very next day, i was asked to take sessions for all the scholars on various topics in which i had experience. This proves that it is Allah who gives respect and it is he who pulls it away! This is not in humans hand. So instead of worrying about earning respect, just be sincere , honest and dedicated in your work, and automatically you earn respect. (This was a great learning for me!). At first, I was quite astonished, but later i understood the fact that every person is an expert in his own field. There are a lot of things which we learn from these scholars who have spent years in Islamic Universities studying Sharia and at the same time there are a lot of things we (as Daees) need to teach these scholars from our worldly experiences.
During our stay in this Madrasa, we realized that there is an important need of introducing subjects like World politics, world scenario, Internet and Technology, English language etc. We observed that 90% of these qualified scholars are completely unaware of the happenings of this world and have no idea about the latest technology. So where are they going to end up? Either handling another madrasa or leading as Imaam in a mosque!
The critics of Islam blame Madrasas and call them “havens for terrorists”. What a stupid conclusion which is due to their ignorance of reality. The students of such Madrasas are ignorant of the happenings in the world. Many students, whom i interviewed, have absolutely no idea about 9/11 attacks. They have no clue about whats happenings even in other parts of India. Nearly all of them were talking too sheepishly about using force, even though they held knowledge on Quran and Sunnah. This is because they have never thought about using force for Islam. This is what they are taught here, that force shouldn’t be used in Islam.
Forget about Terrorist ideology, i couldn’t find a single student who was of violent nature. I tried to know if any of them had the concept which the Critics of Islam talk about. But i couldn’t find a single person with that concept. Truly, the message of Islam preaches Peace and that is why we don’t find anyone with such concepts here. Check this incident that took place when i was trying to break open a coconut. I started smashing the coconut on a big rock nearby, expecting it to break. One of the students who was passing by came near me and said, “stop”. I asked, “why, what happened?”. He said there are ants walking over the stone, you might kill them! I was like “Whatttt!!!!
“
Our classes went pretty well. The most important thing we learnt from this course was the importance of offering Tahajjud prayers and doing Zikr all the time. Prior to this, we never realized the power it holds in resolving our issues. What an easy way to have our Dua’s accepted! Unfortunately the entire Ummah “as a whole” have forgotten the importance of both Tahajjud prayers and Allah’s Zikr. Besides learning, we also taught a lot of new things to these scholars which (inshallah) will help them in their endeavor.
During nights we had to take care of our work back home, as we couldn’t leave it to fall down for so many months. Every day after Asr prayers, we were left to ourselves. We spent the evening hours taking care of our work. Thanks to Allah, we could get good Internet wireless connection from Jamia campus.
Besides studies, Brother Nabeel had another interesting past time. He kept exploring the campus in detail. Check out one of his discoveries
below :
Jamia Darussalam‘s campus is huge and lovely. There is a Mosque within the campus that itself is a mark of beauty. It was build by a wealthy businessman from Gulf. It has one tall minaret which is the highlight of the entire mosque. Besides the mosque which is at the center of the campus, many buildings extend over the entire area. The right side buildings on the campus are for children while the left side buildings are for higher studies. There is another mosque outside the campus which is also used for offering prayers. There are two huge playgrounds on the campus, one at the entrance while another behind the IT building. This IT building actually opens just for one month every year. IT isn’t a mandatory subject for the students which is unfortunate. The weather was initially very hot, but later in the month it was wonderful. There are lots of coconut trees planted on the campus. Check out some of the snaps of the Campus:
During our visit to Jamia Darussalam, Oomerabad, we met up with many esteemed scholars who gave us knowledge on various subjects of Sharia. We spent time with them, tried our best to serve and help them with their daily tasks, traveled with them and visited their homes.
All in all, a great Journey to one of the most renowned Islamic University of India. The Journey to Jamia Darussalam, Oomerabad, not only gave us an insight of what happens in the Madrasas, but it also gave us a new experience which is totally different from our daily life. This trip also boosted up our moral since we saw the claims of Anti-Islamic forces, fall down to utter pieces. Their claims that Islamic Madrasas or Islamic Universities are producing Terrorists is nothing but a Big LIE which has been systematically spread across amongst the masses. In reality, these Madrasas are places where Peace Makers are produced in the form of Islamic scholars who are not only assets for our country, but who will also,Inshallah, make our society a better place to live in.
Hope you all had good time reading through the experiences of my Journey!
Assalamalaikum (Peace be upon you)!
I would be traveling to Nepal to take part in a presentation as a speaker, being conducted on 17th, 18th and 19th of May (this month). I guess i will have to ask for a three day leave from Jamia Darusalam to take part in this presentation.
Presentation is on “how to do Da’wah” in the present world. I shall be back in Oomerabad by 20th inshallah.
Check out my next post that shall give further details of my previous post!
This came suddenly and had to plan out in a short span of time. I would be traveling to Malaysia & Singapore this week, for both Official and Da’wah Tour. I have been invited to Singapore for a lecture presentation on our new project “Peace Times”. Since i would be traveling, i may stay offline most of the time. However, will keep updating the happenings as and when i get time. I would probably spend 4 days in Malaysia and 3 days in Singapore.
I also plan to do a little “Field Da’wah work” in Malaysia for a different experience. Never got a chance to experience people from this part of the world.
Will post my tour experiences when i get a chance to sit on net. Got to rush with packing now, so Assalam alaikum!
Ramadhan really zoomed away in no time this year. Just 29 days of fasting for us here in my place. I can easily say this was the most fastest Ramadhan of my life. Before i could even realize that Ramadhan started, its Eid time now.
Taqabbal Allahu Minna Wa Minkum…Eid Mubarak to you and your family!
We went to offer Eid prayers at 7: 30 am in the morning along with my family (including my 3 year old who did not wanted to open his eyes from sleep). The gathering was huge on the ground and we arrived just about 5 minutes before the start of Salah. Got a good place though, but the ground was wet. As always, my mothers advice came handy. I carried a cloth with me in case required (of course only after she pestered me to!). I spread it on the ground and we were all set for Salah. (Still my kid was trying to find a comfortable place to sleep, thus irritating the people standing beside me!)
Finally after the Salah, Khutba began. The Imaam gave an awesome speech with excellent advices to the people. For the first time during Eid Salah, i saw the Imaam asking people to use Media to defend the Ummah. Or else i always here our Moulanas and Moulvis saying Media is Haraam to use. He stressed more on gaining knowledge, Islamic as well as wordly. He encouraged youngsters to take up various fields and excel in it. All in all, an excellent speech. (My kid was still trying to get back to sleep on my lap, asking me to ask sun to go away!)
Coming out of the ground was a tough battle. I had to park my car far off in a lane. Finally we reached home and spent the rest of the day meeting people. In the evening we set out to meet those who couldn’t make it to our house. Every single house i visited, i was made to Eat the Hyderabadi special sweet “Sevian”. I guess i had around 8 bowls already till i reached home. Too much of sugar in my blood made me collapse on bed early! (My kid was finally happy to doze off, but guess what i finally came to know why he was sleepy the whole day. My wife found out that he had gulped down 1/4th of his cough syrup, the night before, as he loves its taste!
)
Eid went well again as always. Just that Allah should consider our Bits & pieces of worship that we did in Ramadhan and Grant us Jannah! Ameen.
Assalamalaikum (Peace be on you all)
